NFL Futures

Each year the boys in Las Vegas post the early early odds on winning the Super Bowl.  With the volatility in the league these days this proposition has become more and more attractive,  because, if you bypass the favorites and can find an appealing underdog or two, the reward can be excellent.

The legal wagering books in Vegas post odds on winning the Bowl and capturing the Conference Championships to get into the big game.  Such a Conference wager on Carolina last year would have netted a marvelous return of 20 to 1 or more.  Even New England to win the Super Bowl last season was a double digits to one proposition.

We begin by posting the current odds to win the Super Bowl and Conference Championships.  The following odds have been posted at www.vegasinsider.com

Favorites like the Pats, Eagles and Colts offered only moderate return for an investment which, in my mind makes them an automatic pass.

But what should a player look for in a potential surprise team that could return a hefty price (10 to 1 or higher).

  1. The return of key injured players that gutted the club the year before
  2. The maturation of a core of young, talented players who seem perched on the edge of a breakthrough.
  3. A fast finish in the previous year that gives momentum for this season
  4. A solid draft that might provide immediate help at one or more key positions
  5. Shrewd free agent shopping
  6. The addition of one or more extremely talented assistant coaches who might bolster a previous area of weakness.

Armed with these indicators here, I’ve posted my most attractive longshots with their Super Bowl and Conference Championship odds in The Clubhouse.
